Work
I'm James Butler. I'm a graphic designer currently living in St. Louis, MO. I have done a range of work from package and print design, logos and branding, signage design, all the way to custom fabrication and woodworking. Examples of my work are shared here in this portfolio page. Most of my work has been done in St. Louis, Missouri.
BlackArc Design- Brand Identity
A logo design and full brand identity for a St. Louis Architecture entrepreneur who is working to make design and architecture approachable to the underserved population in our city..
Center Cafe
Originally an interiors-only project for Arcturis, the client pulled in the graphic design team at the last second during the construction phase to develop and implement a complete brand identity for the cafe within a month. The project’s goal was to establish the cafe as a contemporary addition to the America’s Center, as well as seamlessly integrate the business into the lively Downtown Washington Avenue District.
Arctiki Bar
David Stine Furniture, a maker of sustainable furniture made of locally grown hardwoods, hosts a Client Appreciation party at their farm in Dow, Illinois each year. The company commemorated its 25th Anniversary in 2022, so this year’s party celebrated their long-term partnerships with design firms, tastemakers, and industry clients.
As a brand experience partner of David Stine Furniture, Arcturis contributed to the celebration by creating a fully immersive branded “tiki bar” experience. A twist on the Arcturis brand name, we developed the concept of the “Arctiki” bar, and donned the catchline, “A Midwestern Oasis.” We created a brand identity for the pop-up that married midcentury Hawaiian tiki bar vibes with the contemporary and minimal Arcturis brand identity. The design layered the Arcturis brand palette and sleek, minimal design aesthetic with vintage, nostalgic “beach shack” typography and illustrations.
The brand experience architectural element manifested as a repurposed, vintage tiki bar hangout with a fresh coat of white paint. Adding the layers of branded signage, printed menus, tropical greenery, branded barware, the Arctiki Bar became a fully immersive midwestern, tropical oasis encircled in corn and plaid.

Friends For Good: Wallflower
Kaldi's Coffee Custom Signage
SPACE designed the interiors for a new Kaldi’s location that needed signage to not only fit within the brand standards, but also to abide by the strict historic building and city parameters. The solution was a very durable, clean
design that considered all of these challenges, and for consistency, utilized materials also used inside the space.
SPACE Architects + Designers + Builders Rebrand
To establish one unified brand, SPACE decided to rename itself in 2017 to include all services provided. Before this change, the brand went by two distinct names for the business with separate logos for each. The original logos relied solely on color as the distinction between the two sides of the business. The re-design removed this reliance on color. Additionally, an alternative version of the logo was designed to open up the icon, playing
with the concept of open SPACE.
Randolfi's Menu Design
Both menus were designed to be frequently and easily
updated by the client. This led to thoughtful design solutions such as choosing standard paper and printing methods to be
quickly reproduced. Other elements like the branded drink
menu cover and the leather ties that bind the food menu
help to provide the allure and upscale environment that
the restaurant offers.
SPACE Client Gifts
To celebrate the holidays, SPACE delivered a branded gift box to their clients. The theme was, “Wishing you Happy Holidays, and a Bright New Year!” Focusing on the concept of brightness, the contents were warm things best enjoyed by a bright fire. We collaborated with local businesses and a few clients to build the gift box. We cut and branded wooden coasters
in-house, and designed a custom greeting card to tie it all together.
St. Louis Pennant
Inspired by vintage travel pennants and the city’s flag, this pennant was designed to commemorate the rich history of St. Louis and celebrate the city’s history. Designed and produced in collaboration with Oxford Pennant Company.
